UK Student Visa Process (2026–2027 Updated)

Step-by-step guide for Pakistani students applying for UK Student Visa.
96%+ success rate when you follow this process correctly.

⚠️ 2026-2027 IMPORTANT UPDATES — Read This First:
  • Pre-CAS Credibility Interviews: Most UK universities now mandate a Pre-CAS interview before issuing your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. These determine if your intentions are genuine; failure here means no CAS and no visa. We provide mock sessions to ensure you’re ready.
  • Financial Requirement Increased (Again): The Home Office has raised maintenance funds to reflect inflation:
    • London£1,529 per month (up to 9 months = £13,761).
    • Outside London£1,171 per month (up to 9 months = £10,539).
    • Note: These new rates apply to all applications made on or after November 11, 2025.
  • Graduate Route (PSW) Shortened:
    • Applications on or before December 31, 2026, still receive 2 years.
    • Applications on or after January 1, 2027, will be reduced to 18 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates.
    • PhD graduates remain eligible for 3 years.
  • 28-Day Rule (Strict Compliance): Your total funds (Tuition + Maintenance) must be held for 28 consecutive days. The balance must never drop below the required amount for even one day. Your bank statement must be dated within 31 days of your online application submission.
  • Transition to eVisas: As of 2025-2026, physical BRP cards and visa stickers have been fully phased out. You will now manage your status through a digital eVisa linked to your passport.
1

Receive University Offer & CAS

The process begins with securing an offer from a UK Licensed Student Sponsor. Once you meet all conditions (academic transcripts, IELTS/PTE scores, and references), you must pay a tuition deposit. For 2026, most universities require £2,000–£5,000 to demonstrate commitment.

THE CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies):
The CAS is a digital record generated by the university. It is valid for 6 months and can only be used for one visa application. You cannot apply for a visa more than 6 months before your course start date.

PRE-CAS CREDIBILITY INTERVIEW (Strict 2026 Protocols):
Universities now face higher “Compliance Track” scrutiny. You will likely undergo a “Pre-CAS Interview” via Zoom/Teams. You must be prepared to discuss:
• Course Modules: Specific names of subjects you will study.
• Why this University: Comparison with at least 2 other UK universities you researched.
• Financial Viability: Clear explanation of who is funding you and how they earned that money.
• GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant): Why you aren’t studying in Pakistan and how this degree increases your salary back home.

Timeline: 2–12 weeks depending on the university’s peak volume.

2

Prepare Financial Documents (CRITICAL)

Financial errors remain the #1 cause of visa refusals for Pakistani students. You must follow the UKVI Financial Requirements precisely.

MAINTENANCE FUNDS (2026–2027 RATES):
You must prove you have enough money to pay for your first year’s tuition fees PLUS living costs:
• Inside London: £1,529 per month (up to 9 months) = £13,761.
• Outside London: £1,171 per month (up to 9 months) = £10,539.
Note: If your course is shorter than 9 months, multiply the monthly rate by the number of months.

THE 28-DAY RULE (Non-Negotiable):
• The total amount (Fees + Living Costs) must be in the account for 28 consecutive days.
• If the balance drops by even 1 PKR below the required threshold for one minute, the 28-day clock resets to zero.
• The bank statement must be issued no more than 31 days before you submit the online application.

ACCEPTED SOURCES:
• Personal/Parental Bank Account: Must be a cash account (not shares, gold, or property).
• Educational Loan: Must be from an approved Pakistani bank.
• Official Scholarship: Letter from a government or international organization.
Note: Money from uncles, siblings, or cousins is NOT accepted unless they legally transfer it to your or your parents’ account 28 days prior.

3

TB Test (Tuberculosis Screening)

All residents of Pakistan staying in the UK for more than 6 months must provide a TB certificate from an approved clinic.

APPROVED CLINICS IN PAKISTAN:
You must book an appointment with the International Organization for Migration (IOM):
• Islamabad: IOM, Sector G-10/4.
• Lahore: IOM, 11-C, Gulberg III.
• Karachi: IOM, Plot No. 6/2, P.E.C.H.S.
• Mirpur: IOM, Sector D-4.

THE PROCESS:
• Bring your original Passport and 2 passport-sized photos.
• Test Type: Chest X-ray. If the result is “inconclusive,” a sputum test is required, which can take 8 weeks.
• Cost: Approximately PKR 15,000–25,000 (subject to change based on IOM updates).
• Validity: 6 months.
CRITICAL ADVICE: Book your TB test early. During the July–September peak, appointment slots can be fully booked for 3 weeks in advance.

4

Apply Online (UKVI Application)

The UK has fully phased out physical BRP cards. Your visa status is now managed through a UKVI Digital Account.

APPLICATION FEES (2026–2027 Estimates):
• Visa Fee: £524 (Standard processing).
• Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year.
Important: UKVI calculates IHS in 6-month increments. If your course is 1 year + 4 months of “wrap-up” time, you will be charged for 1.5 or 2 years (£1,164 or £1,552).

DOCUMENT SUBMISSION:
You will upload high-quality scans of:
• Passport: All pages with stamps/visas.
• CAS Statement: Downloaded from the university portal.
• Financial Proof: Stamped bank statements and a Letter of Consent if using a parent’s account.
• Academic Evidence: Degrees/Transcripts mentioned on your CAS.
• English Proficiency: IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, or LanguageCert.

5

Biometrics Appointment

Once the online fee is paid, you must book an appointment at a VFS Global Center to enroll your biometrics.

VFS CENTRES IN PAKISTAN:
• Islamabad: Park Road, Chattha Bakhtawar.
• Lahore: Upper Mall Scheme.
• Karachi: Bahria Complex IV, Gizri.
• Mirpur: Mirpur City.

WHAT HAPPENS AT VFS:
• Fingerprints: Digital scan of all 10 fingers.
• Digital Photo: This photo will be used for your digital eVisa profile.
• Document Scanning: If you didn’t upload documents online, VFS will scan them for a fee (approx. PKR 5,000+).

PROCESSING OPTIONS:
• Standard: 15 working days (3 weeks).
• Priority: 5 working days (Extra £500).
• Super Priority: 24 hours (Extra £1,000 – available only in certain cities).

6

Visa Decision & Pre-Departure

HOW YOU RECEIVE THE DECISION:
• You will receive an “Official Decision Letter” via email.
• The Vignette: You will still get a 90-day sticker in your passport to allow entry into the UK.
• The eVisa: Once in the UK, you do NOT collect a BRP card. You log into the UKVI View and Prove service to generate a “Share Code” for landlords and employers.

TRAVELING TO THE UK:
• You must arrive after the start date on your vignette.
• You must carry your TB Certificate and CAS in your hand luggage. Border Force officers often ask Pakistani students to verify their university details upon arrival.

GRADUATE ROUTE (PSW) – 2026/27 UPDATE:
• The Graduate Route allows you to stay and work after graduation.
• Bachelor’s/Master’s: 2 years (Note: New reviews may adjust this to 1.5 years by late 2026; always check official GOV.UK updates).
• PhD: 3 years.

PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST:
✓ Update your UKVI account with your current email and phone.
✓ Pay your remaining tuition fees (if any) before traveling.
✓ Book University-managed or private student accommodation.

Honest Assessment

We believe in telling you the truth about UK PR prospects.
Read this carefully before making your decision.

⚠️ HONEST ASSESSMENT FROM HOIST HORIZONS:

UK PR success rate for Pakistani students: 30–40%
(compared to Canada: 70–90%, Australia: 60–75%)

This is NOT to discourage you from UK.
UK is EXCELLENT for education quality and 1-year Master’s.

But if PR is your PRIMARY goal:
→ Canada is a significantly better choice (70–90% PR success)
→ Australia is second best (60–75% PR success)

If education quality, 1-year programme, UK experience is your goal:
→ UK is excellent and we fully support this choice

We are independent advisors. We tell you this
so you make the right decision — even if it means recommending
another country.

🎓 Graduate Route Visa

What is it?
After completing your UK degree, you can stay and work in the UK for:
– 2 years: Bachelor’s and Master’s
– 3 years: PhD graduates

IMPORTANT 2027 UPDATE:
From January 2027, Graduate Route reduces to:
– 18 months: Bachelor’s and Master’s
– 3 years: PhD (unchanged)

This affects you if starting from 2026–2027.

During Graduate Route:
✓ Work in any job (no restrictions)
✓ Be self-employed
✓ Travel in and out of UK
✗ Cannot extend Graduate Route
✗ Must switch to different visa to stay longer

Skilled Worker Visa (Path to PR)

What is it?
After Graduate Route, if you get a job paying the updated 2026 – 2027 threshold salary, you switch to a Skilled Worker Visa.

Requirements:
✓ Job offer from UK employer (licensed sponsor)
✓ Salary: £33,400/year minimum for most “New Entrants” (switching from student/graduate visa). Note: General threshold for experienced workers is now £41,700.
✓ English language: Level B2 now required (most degrees meet this)
✓ Visa application fee + IHS charge (£1,035/year)

Path to PR (Indefinite Leave to Remain):

  • Standard Path: Stay 10 years (New baseline rule effective April 2026)

  • Fast-Track Path: Stay 5 years (Only if salary is above £50,270/year)

  • After 1 year ILR: Apply for British citizenship (optional)

TOTAL TIME FROM STUDY START TO PR:
1-year Master’s + 1.5-year Graduate Route + 10-year Skilled Worker
= 12.5 years minimum to PR (Standard)
= 7.5 years minimum to PR (High-earner fast-track)

HONEST CHALLENGE:
Getting sponsored Skilled Worker job is highly competitive due to the £33,400+ salary requirement. UK employers prefer UK citizens/settled workers to avoid sponsorship costs. Many graduates struggle to find roles that meet these higher 2026-2027 pay thresholds. This is why we rate UK PR at 25-35% success for new graduates.

🎯 Our Recommendation for YOU

CHOOSE UK IF:
✓ You want world-class education
✓ 1-year Master’s suits your timeline
✓ You want UK work experience
✓ Career in UK/international companies
✓ Budget for longer PR timeline
✓ You have in-demand skills (tech, finance, healthcare)

CHOOSE CANADA IF:
✓ PR is your primary goal
✓ Family joining you (family reunification easier)
✓ More affordable lifestyle
✓ Larger Pakistani diaspora support
✓ Simpler immigration system

HONEST ADVICE:
We have sent students to both countries

💡 7 Ways to Reduce Your UK Study Costs

Scholarship Opportunities for UK Study

⚠️ IMPORTANT — WHAT WE DO AND DON’T DO:

✅ What Hoist Horizons DOES:
– Identify merit-based university scholarships you can realistically get
– Review scholarship essays (GREAT, university awards)
– Guide your application strategy
– Help with reference letters
– Average result: Our students secure PKR 5–10 lakh in university scholarships

❌ What we DON’T do or guarantee:
– We do NOT secure fully-funded scholarships (Chevening, Commonwealth)
– We CANNOT guarantee any scholarship amount
– We CANNOT guarantee scholarship approval
– Fully funded scholarships are between you and the scholarship provider

Fully funded programmes (Chevening, Commonwealth) are extremely competitive — 10–15% acceptance rate. We can assist your application, but results depend entirely on the scholarship board’s decision.

🎓 University Merit Scholarships — Achievable (£2,000–£5,000)

WHAT ARE THEY?
Almost every UK university offers “International Excellence” or
“Merit” scholarships to strong international applicants.

HOW THEY WORK:
1. You apply to university with strong academic profile
2. University assesses your CGPA / percentage
3. If you qualify → scholarship offered with admission letter
4. Scholarship amount deducted from tuition invoice
5. You pay reduced tuition!

AMOUNTS BY UNIVERSITY TYPE:
– Russell Group: £2,000–£3,000 (minimum — high standards)
– Mid-tier / Red Brick: £3,000–£5,000 (generous to attract students)
– Modern universities: £2,000–£5,000 (very competitive to attract talent)

REAL EXAMPLES:
– University of Westminster: £2,000–£5,000 International Excellence Award
– Coventry University: £2,000–£4,000 Academic Achievement Award
– Northumbria University: £2,500 Vice-Chancellor’s International Award
– University of Hertfordshire: £2,000–£4,000 International Scholarship
– Sheffield Hallam: £3,000 South Asia Excellence Award

ELIGIBILITY:
– Typically 60%+ in Bachelor’s for Master’s scholarships
– Apply early — some are first-come-first-served
– No separate essay required in most cases

OUR STRATEGY:
We apply to 6–8 universities specifically chosen for scholarship potential.
If 3–4 offer scholarships of £3,000 each, you choose the best overall offer.
Realistic outcome: PKR 7–18 lakh scholarship.

WHAT IS IT?

OUR HONEST ADVICE:
Apply to both — there’s no harm and applications are free.
But plan your finances as if you won’t receive them.
Treat them as a bonus if you do receive them.
We assist with essays and applications as part of our service,
but we cannot influence the selection outcome.

Our students who received Chevening: 2–3 per year from our portfolio.
Most students secure university scholarships (£2,000–£5,000) not government.

STEP 1 — PROFILE ASSESSMENT (Consultation):
We assess your CGPA, background, and profile.
Identify which scholarship tiers are realistic for you.

STEP 2 — UNIVERSITY SELECTION WITH SCHOLARSHIP FOCUS:
We shortlist universities not just for programme quality, but also for scholarship availability.
Target: Apply to 6–8 universities with scholarship potential.

STEP 3 — ESSAY SUPPORT:
For GREAT scholarships, Chevening, or university essay requirements, we review and give feedback on multiple drafts.
This is the most impactful thing we do for your scholarship chances.

STEP 4 — REFERENCE LETTER GUIDANCE:
Strong references from the right people improve scholarship chances.
We guide: Who to ask, what to request, how to brief them.

STEP 5 — TIMELINE MANAGEMENT:
We track all deadlines so you never miss a scholarship.
Chevening: November | Commonwealth: December | GREAT: March–May

REALISTIC OUTCOMES FROM OUR STUDENTS:
– 30–40% of our students receive some form of scholarship
– Average scholarship: £3,000–£5,000 (PKR 10.7–17.9 lakh)
– Best cases: £8,000–£10,000 (PKR 28.6–35.8 lakh)
– Full Chevening: 2–3 per year from our portfolio

The goal: Reduce your total cost by PKR 10–35 lakh through scholarships.

Frequently Asked Questions — UK Study

Honest answers to the questions Pakistani students ask most

Is the 28-day rule really that strict?

Yes, completely strict. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has a zero-tolerance
approach. Your bank balance must not drop below the required amount for even
one day during your 28-day period. Common mistakes:

– Paying a large bill that temporarily reduces balance
– Moving money between accounts (shows as a dip)
– Receiving a large deposit during the 28 days (looks suspicious)
– Starting the 28-day count wrong (Day 1 must be on/before application date)

Our service includes a detailed bank statement review before you apply.
This single step prevents most UK visa refusals.

Yes, in most cases. Common switches:

Student Visa → Graduate Route: Automatic switch when you complete degree
Graduate Route → Skilled Worker: Need a sponsored job offer
Graduate Route → Family Visa: If married to UK citizen or settled person
Student Visa → Student Visa: To extend for another degree

You CANNOT switch from Student Visa to:
– Visitor Visa
– Tourist status

Important: You must apply to switch BEFORE your current visa expires.
Do not overstay — this creates serious immigration problems.

Graduate Route (also called PSW — Post-Study Work):
Allows you to stay and work in UK for 2 years after completing your degree.
No job offer required. Work in any role. No minimum salary requirement.

IMPORTANT 2027 CHANGE:
From January 2027, the Graduate Route changes to 18 months for
Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. PhD remains at 3 years.

What this means for you:
If you start a 1-year Master’s in September 2025, finish September 2026,
you apply Graduate Route → you get 2 years (old rules still apply).
If you start in September 2026, finish September 2027 → you get 18 months.

Our advice: Starting September 2025 still gets you 2 years.
Starting September 2026 gets 18 months — still valuable but shorter.

Most UK universities DO require HEC (Higher Education Commission) attestation
for your Pakistani degree, especially for Master’s applications.

WHAT TO ATTEST:
– Bachelor’s degree certificate
– Bachelor’s transcripts
– Sometimes Intermediate certificate

HOW TO GET HEC ATTESTATION:
1. Visit HEC offices in Islamabad (in person or post)
2. Online application: hec.gov.pk
3. Time: 2–4 weeks (can take longer in busy periods)
4. Cost: Varies (check current HEC fee schedule)

IBCC ATTESTATION:
For Intermediate (FSc, F.A.) certificates, you need IBCC attestation.
IBCC offices in major Pakistani cities.

OUR ADVICE:
Start attestation process early — at least 3 months before application.
We guide you through which documents need attestation and where to go.

This is FALSE. UK degrees are among the most highly recognised in Pakistan.

UK degrees are recognised by:
– HEC Pakistan (officially recognised universities list available)
– All major Pakistani employers
– Government of Pakistan (civil service, armed forces)
– Global employers worldwide

Most Valuable UK Degrees in Pakistan Job Market:
– MBA (UK business schools)
– LLM (UK law degree for Pakistani lawyers)
– MSc Engineering
– MSc Computer Science
– MA Education (for academic positions)

Verify: Before choosing a university, confirm it’s on HEC’s recognised list.
We always check this for our recommended universities.

DEPENDS on your study level:

Master’s and PhD (if course is above Bachelor’s level):
✓ Spouse / civil partner can apply as a dependant
✓ Children can join
Cost: Additional visa fee + IHS per family member
Spouse can work: Yes, full-time (Graduate Route level)
Financial requirement: Additional funds required for each dependant
(£845/month outside London, £1,136/month in London per dependant)

Bachelor’s and Foundation:
✗ Dependants NOT permitted (rule tightened in 2024)

Important: Additional financial documentation required for dependants.
We help with dependant visa applications as part of our service.

Banks that most easily accept international students:
– Monzo (app-based, open before arriving, recommended!)
– Starling (another good app bank)
– HSBC Student Account (traditional bank, good for long-term)
– Barclays (traditional bank)

Avoid initially: Lloyds, NatWest, RBS — often require UK credit history.

What you need to open:
– Passport
– Proof of address (university accommodation letter)
– Proof of student status (offer letter / enrolment letter)

Our Recommendation:
Download Monzo app, verify with UK address before arriving.
Have a backup — carry some GBP cash for first week.
Some Pakistani students use international transfers initially via
Wise (transferwise.com) — good rates, lower fees than traditional banks.

IELTS Requirements by Level:
– Foundation Year: 5.0–5.5 overall (no band below 5.0)
– Bachelor’s: 6.0–6.5 overall (no band below 5.5)
– Master’s: 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0)
– PhD: 6.5–7.0 overall

IELTS Alternatives (accepted by most universities):
– PTE Academic: Equivalent scores accepted
– Duolingo: 95–120 (accepted by many modern universities)
– OET: For healthcare programmes only

Some universities accept WITHOUT English test if:
– Your medium of instruction was English (issue university letter confirming)
– You have O-Level / A-Level English Grade C or above

Our Advice:
IELTS is safest and most universally accepted.
Some universities provide conditional offers pending IELTS — take course first,
then take IELTS. But don’t count on improving while studying!
We advise target score before application.

HONEST ANSWER:

It depends heavily on:
– Your field of study
– Your degree grade
– Your work experience
– Your networking during studies
– The job market at graduation time

Fields where getting sponsored UK jobs is EASIER:
✓ Information Technology / Software Engineering
✓ Healthcare (NHS actively recruits — doctors, nurses, pharmacists)
✓ Data Science / AI / Machine Learning

✓ Civil / Structural Engineering

Fields where it is HARDER:
✗ General Business (very competitive)
✗ Arts / Humanities (fewer sponsor employers)
✗ Law (unless qualified as UK solicitor — separate process)

Tips to Improve Chances:
– Work part-time in your field during studies (adds UK experience)
– Network actively — LinkedIn, university career events, societies
– Target companies with sponsorship licences (check: gov.uk sponsor list)
– Apply from Year 1 — don’t wait until last month of Graduate Route

Our Post-Arrival Support includes:
Where to look for jobs, how to identify sponsor employers,
CV formatting for UK market, LinkedIn profile guidance.
